Using the Field Trip Report Generator: 4 Steps

Report creation depends on site photos. Using this method, reports are and easy 4 steps process. This work was made possible by the open source utility exif-js.

Step 1: Take Photos with GPS Data

Enable GPS data capture on your camera. This provides both the geographical coordinates and the date and time stamps used.

NOTE: You can download a set of test files here.

Step 2: Add Title and Comment (optional)

Each photo can be assigned an optional title and comment that will be extracted for the report. Tools are available to add this metadata using mobile devices or computers, but be sure to add the title to the ImageDescription field and the comment to the UserComment field.

NOTE: All ASCII characters except the tilde (~) are allowed in both the title and comment fields. The title can be about 50 characters long, and the comment can contain about 220 characters.

NOTE: In some cases it may be preferable to enter the data into a different field and copy it later, such as with the excellent utility exiftool.

Step 3: Use Web App to Create Report

Place the photos into a folder on a computer and open the Report Generator in a browser (but not Firefox on Windows, which does not work). Select the type of report, the Bounding Box dimensions, and the files using the Browse button. Use the html format for a text report, and the kml for a map-based document.

NOTE: The Bounding Box is an imaginary box that limits the size of the scaled images shown in the report.

Step 4: Save Report with Photos and Launch

The kml file requires Google Earth and the html file can be opened with a version of either Microsoft Word or Open Office. The html file assigns text to several styles to facilitate customization and provide for the automatic generation of a Table of Contents and a Table of Figures from Microsoft Word.
